Lead Bulbs

The addition of a lead bulb greatly increases the performance of a yacht and lowers the centre of gravity, lengthening the distance between the centre of gravity and the centre of thrust, giving the boat greater stability.

The bulb concentrates the weight at the lowest point, so with less weight we get the same stability but with less volume, a smaller surface area to get wet and therefore less friction.
